03 Milestone of Bilingualism


- Learning language might start when you are a baby. -

: Milestone of Bilingualism :


It can separate into 6 stages


   1.   The Cooing stage 

Birth  -  2  months

“Make sounds to acknowledge their basic needs to survive”




   2.   The Babbling stage 

2 - 6 months


 “Make sounds with rhythms and punctuations  but still unidentifiable”





   3.   The one-words stage 

7 - 12  months


“Make a few sounds that are more understandable and almost similar to a word”


   4.   Telegraphic stage 

1 - 2 years

“Blend in words from different languages such as Thankci, understand what those words mean”
         Children will combine two words such as "daddy bye-bye" by the second birthday. They can use many different consonant sounds at the beginning of words including p, b, m, n, h, and w.



   5.   Beginning Oral Fluency Stage 
2 - 4  years 



          “Words combination into one sentence such as ฉันไป eat ที่ restaurant”
               Children use short sentences like "me want more" or "me want cookie" for asking and answering the simple questions. Also, they will talk about activities at daycare, preschool, or friends' homes. Speaks easily without having to repeat syllables or words




   6.   Completed Bilingual Stage


4 years +


“Able to identify differentiate of languages and when to use”
Uses sentences that give many details
Uses past tense correctly"




This is the way of how children learning the language and the first step to becoming bilingual person. To be the bilingual person is not only depends on the milestone but family, social and education are the main factor to develop bilingualism in person.

07 Type of Bilingual

Now we going to look on the type of bilingual people As we learn at the beginning that people can become a bilingual person at birth to 4+ years old . That is called Early bilingualism .         Early bilingualism is defined as the acquisition of more than one language in the pre-adolescent phase of life. Children can learn 2 language at the same time, from birth or acquires a first language and then learn second language. Another one is Late bilingualism which refers to bilingualism when the second language is learned after the age of 6 or 7; especially when it is learned in adolescence or adulthood           Type of bilingualism also classifies according to the skills : Balanced bilinguals and dominant bilinguals.  The difference between Balanced bilinguals and dominant bilinguals is  based on the relationship between the fluency & proficiency  of the respective languages which bilinguals master. Bilingualism is a rare phenomenon .          It has been estimated that more than half the world's population is bilingual, that is lives with two or more languages. Bilingualism is found in all parts of the world, at all levels of society, in all age groups. Even in countries with many monolinguals, the percentage of bilinguals is high. For example, one can estimate that there are as many as 50 million bilinguals in the United States today.  2. Bilinguals acquire their two or more languages in childhood.          One can become bilingual in childhood, but also in adolescence and in adulthood. In fact, many adults become bilingual because they move from one country (or region) to another and have to acquire a second language.
